Publication Date: June 30, This case illustrates how AACI, a non-profit organization that provides health care services to mainly low-income immigrants in San Jose, California, is confronted with the strategic choice of whether to expand its services to a satellite site on the city's east side while an expansion project is currently underway at its central city location.
This award enables AACI to train, hire, and deploy older Asian and Hispanic youth to do what they are already informally doing for their own friends and family: helping them to navigate the health system. We use two proven technologies, community health workers and career advancement academies, to focus on visit enhancement, not full case management. Along with a cohort of peers, students receive health literacy and cultural communication training in the first semester, with hands-on internship experience in the second semester.
Ina group of citizens of Santa Clara County gathered to express discontent and share common concerns about their experiences as Asian Americans. The team of multicultural and multilingual professionals at AACI works to bridge these gaps through an array of services and programs in health, recovery, advocacy, shelter and community. A: In Santa Clara County, 1 in 3 Korean adults reported feeling depressed and nearly 1 in 5 Korean middle and high school students felt sad or hopeless for two or more weeks this past year. However, only 1 in 5 Koreans reported receiving the social and emotional support they needed. We met and collaborated with key community leaders in the South Bay, including religious leaders, Korean school principals, and others in the nonprofit sector already serving the community.
