The tendency to lose control is not due to children absorbing the aggression involved in the computer game itself, as previous researchers have suggested, but rather to the damage done by stunting the developing mind. Using the most sophisticated technology available, the level of brain activity was measured in hundreds of teenagers playing a Nintendo game and compared to the brain scans of other students doing a simple, repetitive arithmetical exercise. To the surprise of brain-mapping expert Professor Ryuta Kawashima and his team at Tohoku University in Japan, it was found that the computer game only stimulated activity in the parts of the brain associated with vision and movement.
Posted January 11, Our son spent the long weeks of last year's summer holidays bunkered in his room — mastering foreign domains, roaming landscapes full of gunfire and explosions, fighting alongside teammates with American accents. Given six weeks of freedom, he spent as many hours in those worlds as possible, progressing from occasional Minecrafter to proper gamer.
By Amanda Lenhart. Video games 8 and gameplay are pervasive in the lives of most American teens — and for boys in particular, video games serve as a major venue for the creation and maintenance of friendships. Over the past two decades, video game and internet technology have shifted, eliminating the need to be in the same room as a requirement for playing games with friends and others. Innovations in game design and platforms have increased the opportunities to interact and socialize while playing.
Print article. I was playing the interactive Internet game from after school until midnight. Not only did my grades suffer, but I was starting to turn down social interactions with friends, believing that I was happier with my computer game than I was with friends.
Video games provide a diverse set of experiences and related activities and are part of the lives of almost all teens in America. To date, most video game research has focused on how games impact academic and social outcomes particularly aggression. There has also been some exploration of the relationship between games and civic outcomes, but as of yet there has been no large-scale quantitative research.
Video games stimulate the parts of the brain that are responsible for impulses and rewards. As a result, video game addiction is a condition with symptoms similar to drug abuse. The World Health Organization defines gaming disorder as a mental health condition that impairs educational, familial, personal, occupational and other functionality in the real world.

While gaming is clearly less harmful than risk-taking behaviour like using alcohol, illegal or legal drugs, driving like hoons, porn-driven sexual behaviour, delinquency or smoking -- there are serious repercussions to a gaming addiction.
The youth, identified only by his surname, Chuang, had reportedly gone without food for almost two days. For two days he continued uninterrupted but on the morning of July 15, an attendant found him asleep at the computer and woke him up, according to a report in the local United Daily News broadsheet. After staggering a few steps Mr Chuang collapsed.
Nevertheless, the issue of gaming addiction, and even the pairing of these two words into a recognizable disorder at all, remains divisive. So is video game addiction a real issue, or simply another example of our moral panic being neatly let loose on another target? Critics of the so-called pathologization of video game use argue, among other things, that the harms caused by excessive video gaming are lesser than other recognized addictions by a magnitude of degrees. Supposing drugs and alcohol have the potential to wreck lives, then what harm is a few hours spent in front of the computer or TV at night?
